Everything you need to know to get started

This page guides you step by step to discover our classes, choose the practice that suits you, and easily book your first class.

Many people come to yoga or taiji to move and stretch, to relieve the tensions accumulated in everyday life. But soon, they discover that these practices also offer something deeper and very valuable: freely flowing breath, a calmer mind, and greater inner balance. Our classes invite you to explore this experience at your own pace, in a simple and welcoming atmosphere.

Step 1: Choose your discipline

Surya Montreal student performing Yoga Suryashtanga

Yoga (Suryashtanga)

Stretch and strengthen your whole body, breathe, and enjoy the moment!

Suryashtanga Yoga is a skillful combination of dynamic movements and static postures, synchronized with deep, regular breathing.

The instructor will explain the underlying philosophy of “Yoga in 8 steps“, which leads to a peaceful state of mind. You will be encouraged to adapt the postures to your physical abilities and how you feel on the day, while the instructor will choose a sequence of exercises based on external factors such as the season of the year.

You will be impressed by the benefits to your body, but also by the emotional and mental calm that comes with practicing! Read more…

Do you have any specific questions? Check out the questions and answers below or contact us directly.

Yes. Our classes are structured so that beginners have time to discover the basics, while advanced students can add details and focus on specific intentions for a more internalized practice.

If you want to start yoga and take it very slowly, opt for the gentle yoga class.

All you need to bring is comfortable clothing and, for yoga and meditation classes, a mat (you can rent one for $2.50 at the studio).

For Qigong and Taijiquan, you can bring indoor sneakers, but you can also practice barefoot.

We recommend establishing a regular practice routine. Even one session per week brings benefits. If you want to deepen your experience, two or three classes per week are recommended.

Furthermore, yoga and taijiquan are different but complementary practices. You can take both types of classes.

Suryashtanga is a yoga practice developed by the founder of our school, Stéphane Chollet. It is based on the philosophical foundations of “Yoga in 8 steps” (Ashtanga). This includes ethical principles, physical exercises, conscious breathing, and concentration.

Our yoga classes begin with dynamic exercises, followed by static postures and a guided relaxation.

There are various meditation techniques. All aim to calm the mind, but their practice and results differ.

At Surya, we practice “creative meditation”: guided meditations that include visualizations. In our experience, this is a good method that can be integrated into everyday life, even when our minds are often very restless.

Taijiquan is an internal Chinese martial art now renowned for its health benefits. There are different styles and schools in the Chinese tradition, including Taoist Taichi. Each school has its own specific characteristics, but all are based on similar principles and a common philosophy.

At Surya, we practice HunYuan Taijiquan, which includes Qigong to increase our vital energy and spiral movements to deeply stretch our bodies and improve energy circulation.
